Board-certified urologist specializing in minimally invasive urologic and vascular treatment, practicing in Midtown Manhattan and Forest Hills.
Dr. David Shusterman is a board-certified urologist who has built his practice around a straightforward conviction: that the least invasive treatment capable of solving a problem is almost always the right one, and that patients are entitled to hear about all of their options rather than the subset a given specialty happens to perform.
He began his surgical training in 1999, completing internship and general surgery years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Chicago Hospitals. He did three years of general surgery rather than the usual two before entering urology residency in 2002 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey — a program that took two residents a year when the case volume needed four. The consequence was an unusually heavy operative experience and three years as a senior resident. He became chief resident in urology in 2006 and completed his training in 2007.
He opened his own practice in 2009. It has since grown into a multi-specialty group spanning urology, gynecology, primary care and interventional radiology, and in 2021 he built out the interventional radiology arm specifically to bring prostatic artery embolization in-house — a decision that also made fibroid, varicocele, hemorrhoidal and vein embolization available across the group.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Shusterman teaches urology to physicians in training, serves as a urology expert witness, and writes for industry journals. He is repeatedly recognized by colleagues for the quality of the patient relationship as much as for the surgery — which is, by his own account, the part of the work he would least like to be remembered without.
